If moms ever needed a “time out,” that moment is now. We created a Mommy Time Out Jar to give you quick, simple ways to pamper yourself this Mother’s Day—ideas that won’t break the bank or take half a day (because who has that kind of time?).
The other day Max was having a moment—a full-blown tantrum. I took a breath and told him he needed a time out. In classic three-year-old fashion he looked at me and said, “No, mommy, you get a time out.” Honestly, brilliant. I didn’t hesitate.

Seriously—yes please to a time out. Could someone make me a snack while they’re at it? That idea turned into this: a time out jar for those moments when I have a few spare minutes or, more important, when I actually need to pause and take those minutes even if my to-do list is full. I’m always on the go, and the thing that keeps getting pushed aside is me.

I pulled together 15 of my favorite quick pampering ideas. The jar is just a starting point—customize it with things that make you feel replenished. Toss the ideas into a jar and put it somewhere visible so you remember to take those little moments for yourself.
I’d love to hear your ideas too. I’ve learned I’m a better mom, partner, and friend when I refill my own tank. With everything happening in the world, taking care of ourselves matters more than ever.
So kids, feel free to give me a time out anytime. Love, Mom.
Mommy Time Out Jar

- Five-minute journal with a cup of tea: I love a short, guided journaling session to jot a few thoughts without pressure. It’s restorative and fast.
- Take a hot bath: Add bath salts or a hair mask, wrap your hair in a mom bun with a scrunchie, and relax while the mask works. It’s a little self-care combo that feels luxurious and efficient.
- Light a candle and read: Spend ten minutes with a book and a calming candle. Even a short reading break can feel like a big hug and reset your mood.
- DIY face mask: Mash a ripe banana or half an avocado with honey and a touch of lemon. Apply for 10–15 minutes and rinse. Coconut oil is another quick, nourishing option.
- Walk around the block without your phone: A brief walk in fresh air can boost mood and energy. It doesn’t need to be long—just stepping outside helps.
- Exfoliate with a scrub: Try an easy homemade sugar scrub to soften hands and skin and leave you smelling great. It’s simple to make and feels like a mini spa treatment.
- Stretch and breathe: Five minutes of stretching and deep belly breaths improves circulation, eases tension, and reduces stress. Even one minute is worth it.
- Watch the sunrise or sunset: Pause and admire the sky. It’s a small act of gratitude that grounds you and reminds you to appreciate life’s simple moments.
- Repeat affirmations in the mirror: Say kind things to yourself out loud. It may feel odd at first, but positive self-talk works and builds confidence.
- Make a green smoothie: A nutritious green smoothie can make your body feel grateful. Freeze extras in popsicle molds for a healthy treat.
- Create something: Try a small craft, a sketch, or even paint a rock. Creative activity is therapeutic and doesn’t require perfection.
- Paint your nails: A fresh coat of polish is a quick, inexpensive way to feel pampered and polished.
- Look at old photos: Make a cup of tea and flip through cherished photos. It’s a comforting, nostalgic break that warms the heart.
- Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while: Reconnecting lifts both your spirits and theirs—especially if someone might be feeling isolated.
- Watch a short motivational video: A brief TED Talk or a short uplifting clip can refocus your mindset and inspire action.
These small acts add up. Keep a jar of options nearby and pick one when you need a mini break. No guilt—just a gentle reminder that taking care of yourself matters.
