Tristan works at a school, so he brings home a variety of germs every day. To help keep us healthy, I aim to prepare balanced meals and nourishing snacks. It’s paid off: neither of us has had a cold in over a year.
When friends or coworkers start getting sick, I like to make a large mug of golden milk as a comforting pick-me-up.

Golden milk, also called turmeric milk, is a traditional Indian beverage that’s gained popularity because it’s rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory qualities. While it’s often made with cow’s milk, our household avoids dairy. I use a mix of canned full-fat coconut milk and unsweetened almond milk, but any higher-fat milk alternative will work well.

Because it’s comforting and contains healthy fats, golden milk is a great afternoon boost—perfect for around 4 p.m. when you need something to tide you over until dinner and don’t feel like leaving the house.

If you’ve never tried golden milk, expect a creamy, warm drink with a gentle spice. I sweeten mine with raw honey or coconut sugar, giving it a balance of savory and sweet—think of a mildly sweet Indian curry in drink form. It’s simple to make and very soothing. Seriously, make a batch—you won’t be disappointed. It’s delicious and good for you.
If golden milk isn’t your thing but you want to include turmeric in your diet, try a turmeric-forward savory dish like a vegan chickpea curry for a flavorful alternative.
