Saturday Story — One Million Gelato Memories — a short piece about the small magic of eating gelato in Italy.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for… you know the rest.
Gelato is a summer favorite and an all-year delight that brings people together. In Italy, gelaterias are everywhere — so many that you might wonder how they all survive. The answer is simple: each one matters to someone.
Every day and late into the night, Italians go out for gelato. The special thing is that nearly everyone has a particular place they return to.
Outside the elementary school, a little girl with brown curls bounces along, holding her nonno’s hand as they head for their afternoon treat. She chooses limone and fragola while he looks on with pride.
Across the street, a sweet teenage couple sways and steals kisses on the way to their favorite nostalgic gelateria. They share pistachio and cioccolato from a single cone.
Uptown, an elderly gentleman in a navy cardigan and pressed khakis walks to the oldest gelateria to meet his circle of friends. He doesn’t even need to order — they already have a cup of nocciola waiting for him.
Downtown, a group of tourists who researched the top spot in town stand in line for a local experience and sample that day’s special. Three best friends shriek and gossip, holding dripping cones from a tiny shop tucked down an alley off the beaten path.
Everyone picks what reminds them of childhood — stracciatella, pan di stelle, pesca. A family of three celebrates at a sit-down gelateria on the city’s highest point with the best view; the little girl asks for her usual, an affogato al gianduia.
Do you see? Each gelateria survives because it is meaningful to someone. At every age and stage, gelato makes memories. These are a few of mine.
What are your ice cream memories? Which flavors do you love? Everyone has a story — I’d love to hear yours.
Love, Elena
