Absolutely Perfect Chocolate Frosting

This chocolate frosting is one of my favorite things to make. I don’t always go for heavy frostings, but this one strikes the ideal balance. It looks like a classic chocolate frosting, but in taste and texture it’s something special: sweet with a hint of salt, intensely chocolatey, fluffy, and creamy without being cloying. In my book, it’s the perfect chocolate frosting.

For the lightest, fluffiest result use an electric mixer. If you don’t have one, you can still make this by hand — it just takes a bit more effort and elbow grease.

Start by creaming together butter, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Then add powdered sugar and whip until combined and airy.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup salted butter 2 sticks
  • ½ Cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 ¼ Cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ Cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Using an electric mixer, whip together the butter, cocoa powder, and salt until light and fluffy. Add the powdered sugar and whip again until well combined and airy.
  • With the mixer running on low, slowly stream in the heavy cream and vanilla. Increase the speed to high and whip until the frosting is super light and fluffy.
