Adorable Snowman Cupcakes: Cute Winter Dessert Ideas

Baby, it’s cold inside — and these snowman cupcakes are the cutest winter treat you’ll make this season!

I’m continuing my “25 Days of Christmas Bakes” series with the fifth themed recipe. If you’ve baked along so far, you know this has been so much fun. Today’s project is quick, simple, and great for bakers of any skill level: frosted snowman cupcakes that come together in minutes.

These snowman cupcakes are very easy to make, and I’ve included a clear step-by-step tutorial so you can see how fast they come together. Let’s get started.

Snowman cupcakes

Where to begin?

Start with a batch of my vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream. It’s a reliable, delicious base for these cupcakes. For the cupcakes I tinted the batter a soft sky blue with a drop or two of gel food coloring to give them a wintry look.

How to make easy vanilla cupcakes

The ingredients for my white cake are pantry-friendly and familiar. To convert the cake batter into cupcakes, divide it into 24 liners, add a touch of blue gel coloring, and bake the cupcakes for about 12–14 minutes.

Key ingredients for the cupcakes:

  • Buttermilk — If you don’t have it, make a quick substitute by adding 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup whole milk and letting it sit for 30 minutes.
  • Sour cream — Use full-fat for the best texture and richness.
  • Egg whites — This recipe uses four egg whites. Bring refrigerated ingredients to room temperature before mixing.
  • Vanilla — I use a budget-friendly vanilla in the cake and reserve the higher-quality vanilla for the buttercream if desired.
  • Vegetable oil — Keeps cupcakes extra tender and fluffy; I don’t recommend substituting melted butter.
  • White cake mix — Choose a reliable brand you like for consistent results.

How to make classic vanilla buttercream

For the snowman decorations I used a smooth vanilla buttercream. It holds shape well for piping and tastes classic with the cupcakes.

Buttercream essentials

  • Unsalted butter — Let it sit at room temperature briefly so it softens slightly before whipping.
  • Salt — Adding salt allows better control over the final balance of flavors.
  • Vanilla — Use pure vanilla extract for the best flavor; a small splash of almond extract is optional.
  • Heavy cream — Adds richness and helps adjust consistency; add a little at a time to reach desired texture.
  • Powdered sugar — Add gradually and adjust to achieve the piping consistency you need.

The full directions for my vanilla buttercream are included with the cake recipe. For these cupcakes, the buttercream should be smooth and pipeable.

Step-by-step directions

Gather the decorating supplies:

  1. Wilton 1A piping tip — a large round tip for piping the snowman body with buttercream.
  2. Winter-themed sprinkles — use a mix with small dragees and jimmies for texture and earmuff details.
  3. Carrot nose sprinkles — small orange sprinkles work well for the snowman’s nose.
  4. Small black sphere sprinkles — for eyes and buttons.

2. Spread sprinkles on a flat plate. Gently press the piped buttercream into the sprinkles so the base is covered.

3. Using the same tip, pipe a larger dollop for the snowman’s body on top of the sprinkled base, then pipe a slightly smaller dollop for the head. If the shape isn’t perfectly round, gently smooth it with a damp fingertip.

4. Add small black sphere sprinkles for the eyes and buttons, and place a carrot nose sprinkle in the center of the face.

5. For earmuffs, place two dragees at each side of the head and connect them across the top with a line of jimmies. That’s all there is to it — simple and adorable.
