Gran Agave Dining Room
Gran Agave, Waterfront, Pittsburgh, PA
Having grown up on the West Coast, I’m used to authentic Mexican flavors. After moving to the East, I noticed fewer options for genuinely good carne asada and soft-shell tacos. To sample something closer to home, my family and I visited Gran Agave at the Waterfront one weekend.
The restaurant’s décor is simple but tasteful. A bar sits at the far end, pouring large margaritas and bottles of Corona. Seating is comfortable—about 50 seats in the dining area plus a dozen or so at the bar—making it suitable for both casual dinners and small groups.

Shortly after sitting down, warm homemade chips and salsa arrived. The tortilla strips were fresh and properly salted. The salsa tasted bright and balanced, with tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeños and onions—an encouraging start.

The menu at Gran Agave is extensive. Choices include burritos, rolled tacos, seafood like scallops and shrimp, taco salads, and a good selection of cheese- and bean-based dishes for vegetarians. I ordered carne asada tacos on corn tortillas with sides of sour cream and guacamole. My mother chose a shredded chicken taco salad.
When my entrée arrived, it was wrapped in foil. Inside were generous portions: the carne asada tacos were double-wrapped with steamed corn tortillas and came with a separate plate of refried beans, pico de gallo, and tomatillo sauce. The tacos were served hot; the carne asada was tender and well seasoned. The sides complemented the tacos nicely—fresh pico, creamy beans, and a tangy tomatillo sauce.

Chicken Taco Salad
My mother enjoyed her shredded chicken taco salad—loaded with chicken, lettuce and jack cheese—and ended up taking half of it home. The portions at Gran Agave are satisfying, making it a good value for a casual meal.
By the time we left the restaurant was full. The atmosphere felt lively and welcoming, with diners enjoying both food and blended specialty drinks. Service was attentive without being intrusive, and the overall experience was relaxed and pleasant.
If you’re searching for straightforward, old-style Mexican food at reasonable prices, Gran Agave at the Waterfront is worth a visit. The menu offers a variety of options, the portions are generous, and the flavors are genuine—especially for those who appreciate classic carne asada and traditional sides.
