I was getting our Elf on the Shelf, Kit-Kat, ready for the season. This is our first year using an elf: we adopted Kit-Kat after our son had stopped believing, and now our oldest daughter is old enough to enjoy the tradition. I’m excited and have lots of ideas, but many of them required the elf to hold poses better than she did right out of the box. I searched for tutorials, but with a toddler and a 6‑month‑old at home, I didn’t have time or patience to pull out a sewing kit. So I came up with a no‑sew, inexpensive way to make our elf posable. These simple hacks can be done in about 10 minutes with items you probably already have or can get cheaply.

What you need to Make Elf-on-the-Shelf Posable
Items:
- Elf on the Shelf doll
- Wire hanger (the thin clothes‑hanger style)
- Seam ripper or small multi‑tool
- Fabric adhesive or strong clear glue
- Small white pom‑pom (optional, for the hat)
- White velcro dot set

How to Make Elf-on-the-Shelf Posable
- Untwist and straighten the wire hanger. Cut two pieces of wire a little longer than the elf’s arms (about 1/2 inch longer than the arm length).
- Form small loops at both ends of each piece of wire so the cut ends won’t poke through fabric.
- Use a seam ripper or small tool to open a tiny hole in the seam at each wrist.
- Insert one wire into each arm, positioning it so the elf can bend and hold poses.
- Seal the wrist seams with fabric adhesive to close the openings.
- Cut two more pieces of wire about 1/2 inch longer than the elf’s legs.
- Loop the ends of these leg wires as well to prevent poking through the pants.
- Open a small hole about 1/4 inch from the seam of each foot.
- Push one wire into each leg, then close the holes with fabric adhesive.
- If you want the classic pom‑pom on the hat, put a small amount of fabric adhesive on the pom‑pom and attach it about 1/8 inch from the hat’s tip so it stays put.
- Allow all glued areas to dry according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions — I left mine overnight to be safe.
- Cut each velcro dot in half and attach one side to one hand and the matching side to the other hand. This gives the elf hands that can stick to surfaces or props for creative scenes.
- Your elf is now posable and ready for fun setups around the house.
