Can You Cook Pollock from Frozen?

Yes. Alaska pollock can be cooked straight from frozen or you can defrost it first. For safe, even defrosting, leave it in the fridge overnight, or for quicker thawing place the sealed fillets in a bowl of cool water until softened.

Can You Adapt This Stir-Fried Pollock and Noodles Recipe?

Absolutely. You can substitute salmon or another firm white fish if you prefer; cooking times will be similar. Swap the egg noodles for another noodle type or serve the stir-fry over rice. Ingredients

  • 200 g medium egg noodles dried
  • 2 teaspoon stock powder vegetable stock used here, optional
  • 3 tablespoon oil
  • 500 g Alaska pollock fillets frozen, cut into chunks
  • 500 g stir fry vegetables fresh or frozen mixed vegetables
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice powder
  • soy sauce, chilli oil, black pepper optional for seasoning

Instructions

  • Place the noodles in a bowl with the stock powder and cover with boiling water, or cook the noodles according to the packet instructions.
  • Heat two tablespoons of oil in a wok and fry the fish chunks until cooked through, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove the fish gently so it keeps its shape.
  • Add the remaining oil and stir-fry the vegetables with the Chinese five spice for about 3 minutes.
  • Drain the noodles and add them to the wok with a splash of soy sauce and some black pepper. Finish with chilli oil if you like, or serve it on the side for diners to add themselves.
