Since it’s nearly summer — and after a spring that felt like it lasted 4.6 seconds since March 21st, with more rain than sun — I’ve declared it officially milkshake season.

Nectarine milkshake time. With mint. Nectarine and mint might sound odd together, but they’re a lovely pairing. Think bright, juicy fruit complemented by a cool herbal note — refreshing and unexpected.
I was inspired by the scent of nectarine-and-mint soap (yes, Bath and Body Works — foaming soap, no less). That scent sent me hunting for nectarines on sale. Mint wasn’t on sale, and in April in Pittsburgh fresh mint looked less like a garden herb and more like it had a rough few weeks: wilted, browned at the edges, and generally unhappy thanks to cold, gray weather with the occasional snowflake thrown in.

Still, despite the sad state of the mint, I went ahead and made the milkshake inspired by that scent. And because you’re reading this, consider it made for you. I blended a test batch first just in case it tasted awful — better me than you — and thankfully it turned out wonderfully.

The result was fruity, minty, fresh, and invigorating — everything a summer milkshake should be. And yes, I will continue washing my hands.

Maybe if I had more friends I wouldn’t have to subject you to my oddball creations, but for now I’ll keep sharing them here.
