Easy baked homemade Peanut Butter and Carrot Dog Treats made with shredded carrots, peanut butter, whole-wheat flour and oats. One-bowl recipe.

I care about the nutrition of every member of my family — including the four-legged ones. Dogs have their own nutritional needs, and simple homemade treats let you control ingredients and avoid artificial additives.
We rarely buy commercial dog treats. Instead, Clyde, our Bluetick Coonhound, often gets carrot sticks, apple slices, a bit of leftover meat or, oddly enough, refried beans — which he absolutely loves. One accidental spill turned into a lifelong favorite.
Easy Homemade Dog Treats
This recipe is mixed in a single bowl and doesn’t require a mixer. I used large cookie cutters I found at a local store; if you want smaller portions, choose smaller cutters or break the baked treats in half.

Ingredients
- Creamy peanut butter – choose a brand with a short ingredient list and no artificial sweeteners.
- Milk – 2% milk works well; water can be substituted if needed.
- Egg – acts as a binder.
- Carrots – finely shredded for easy incorporation; a food processor speeds this up.
- Whole-wheat flour – more nutritious than all-purpose flour.
- Baking powder – for a light texture.
- Oats – old-fashioned oats are recommended.

How to make the dog treats
Below is a quick visual guide and a clear set of instructions. Full measurements are in the recipe card.

- In a large bowl, stir together peanut butter, milk, egg and shredded carrots. Use a wooden spoon or mixer if preferred.

- Add the dry ingredients — whole-wheat flour, baking powder and oats — and mix until a dough forms.

- Turn the dough onto a floured surface, roll to about 1/4″ thickness and cut into shapes.

- Bake at 325°F on parchment-lined baking sheets for 15 minutes. Flip the treats and bake 10 more minutes, for a total of 25 minutes. Adjust time for smaller sizes.
Recipe notes
- Smaller treats require less bake time.
- If your dog has trouble chewing, bake a little less so the treats stay softer.
Storage
Let treats cool completely, then store in an airtight container for up to one week. Freeze extras for up to three months. Some readers dehydrate the baked treats for longer shelf life.
