7-UP BISCUITS

If you want a simple homemade biscuit without reaching for a mix, these 7-UP Biscuits are a perfect choice. Made from basic pantry ingredients and lemon-lime soda, they bake up soft, fluffy, and slightly tender—almost like fast-food biscuits but made from scratch. This recipe recreates a quick Bisquick-style dough using flour, baking powder, salt, and shortening, then brings it together with sour cream and 7-UP. The result is easy, flavorful biscuits that melt in your mouth.

How to make 7-UP Biscuits

Most 7-UP biscuit recipes use Bisquick, but you can easily make them from scratch. Here’s the streamlined method:

  • Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).
  • Melt butter and pour it into an 8″ square or a 9″x7″ rectangular baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt. Cut in 1/3 cup shortening with a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup sour cream until combined, then add 1/2 cup room-temperature 7-UP and stir; the dough will be sticky and shaggy.
  • Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough onto it. Pat or gently shape the dough into a rectangle roughly the size of your baking dish (about 9″x7″ or 8″ square).
  • Cut the dough into 8 biscuits with a knife to form squares (this uses the whole dough with no scraps). Alternatively, use a round cutter and re-roll any scraps.
  • Place the cut biscuits into the baking dish with melted butter, spacing them evenly.
  • Bake for 16–18 minutes or until the tops are golden. Remove from oven and let cool briefly before serving warm.

How to cut the biscuits

For a no-waste approach, form the dough into a rectangle the same size as your pan and slice it into squares with a knife. I formed mine into a 9″x7″ rectangle and cut it into eight equal biscuits. You can use a round cutter if you prefer the traditional shape, but that can leave leftover dough to rework.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup 7-UP soda, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C).

  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in sour cream with a wooden spoon.
  5. Add 7-UP and stir; dough will be sticky and shaggy.
  6. Flour a flat surface and turn dough out. Form it into a rectangle roughly the size of your dish.
  7. Cut the dough into biscuits (see note). Place the pieces into the buttered dish.
  8. Bake for 16–18 minutes or until tops are golden.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

You can use a round cutter, but cutting the dough into squares with a knife uses all the dough without scraps.
